Sosial security in Finland
Notice that I have not done research on
social security in Finland systematically, I write here second hand information
and my own experience. Unemployment money is as follows: one year income
dependent, is determined according to previous income and you may have savings.
Then long term unemployed (over one year) get daily money but they may have at
most 2000e (about) savings. Both in income dependent and daily money (päiväraha
in Finnish) you get more money if you have a rented appartment (asumistuki in
Finnish), it covers part of the rent and it is tax free. Notice that one may
have an own appartment and one does not need to sell it, in case you have an own
appartment (this holds also in case of support given via social office
(toimeentulotuki in Finnish), not only unemployment money).
Notice that support for rented appartment and unemployment money is usually
not enough for living, then one needs to apply for social money via social
office (not the unemployment office, the money is called toimeentulotuki in
Finnish). You get that if your savings are gone, that is you are not allowed to
have a penny of savings (it is perhaps the way of the world that people having
social support money (toimeentulotuki in Finnish) have cash in secret. When one
applies for social support money one needs to give an account for bank actions
for three months, notice that the bank cleric may be unable to give only 3
months, but prints perhaps the actions for 6 months. If you are greedy you get
anxiety. The point is that one lives with savings as long as possible. There is
one restriction in social support money, that is reasonable rent (kohtuulliset
asumismenot in Finnish). If the rent exceeds the reasonable limit rent one has
to pay the exceeding amount from the rest of the social support money that is
tuned so that one manages all other living costs except the rent. If the amount
of the rent that exceeds the reasonable limit is too big one has to put one's
furniture and other things in a warehouse and one needs to become homeless.
Fortunately the social office offers also appartments. At Asematie 10,
Tikkurila there is the appartment office (asuntovirasto in Finnish) where from I
got applications for an appartment, especially SATO, VVO, VAV and YH. I got an
appartment in 3 months. In general in every city one can apply for an appartment
via the social office.
Then pension, I get pension from KELA (The national pension office,
kansaneläke in Finnish) and work related pension (työeläke in Finnish) and also
from Sweden where I worked for almost a year. Rehabilitation support
(kuntoutustuki in Finnish) is a pension for a restricted time, you get that if
tour mental rehabilitation takes a long time (3-6kk, I don't remember exactly) I
have pension so long, I get part of my bus ticket for free (Matkahuolto in
Finnish) as well as Finnair (aeroplane) and VR (railway).
