Who believes in Jesus is born again in the Holy Ghost which means that one gets the Holy Ghost that is recognized from sincere love. One begins a new life in the Holy Ghost by loving one's neighbour and doing penance. Man can't love one's neighbour without the Holy Ghost because of the original sin, sinful nature (i.e. flesh, see Romans that is the most important book in the Bible, the Gospel (also Gal.)). God creates a creature that is upside down loving one's neighbour sincerely in contrast to being selfish.
According to Christianity one never becomes perfect but sins all the time, but of course one is not allowed to sin deliberately although that happens to all of us. Also according to Christianity who does not believe does not get his sins forgiven, but there is no such big sin that could not be forgiven in the name of Jesus, not even the mark of the beast. (Jesus has the power to forgive a non-believer too, so there is a good chance for your loved one's that have passed to the eternity, believer or not.) This is a matter of interpreting the bible. You should contact your local church.
I am only at the beginning of understanding this, the Lutheran church has the catechism that is christianity in short. A young teacher teached me at the confirmation class that christianity is in short that one should love one's neigbour like one self but is unable, therefore one should believe in Jesus and get sins forgiven and an eternal life.
1Cor. has a list of spiritual gifts, I have the spiritual gift of managing without a wife, a telepathic girl-friend, and prophecy. Despite all the miracles I have seen it is not sure that Christianity is true, I believe and hope that nevertheless. The love of Jesus is the best miracle, he let himself be crucified so that we would have the possibility of an eternal life.
